We had the chance to do a little Q&A with Brian, check it out!
1. How did you first get into CrossFit?
Not all of you know this about me but for about 10 years I was battling a severe substance abuse addiction. Something needed to change, and it did just over 5 years ago. I reached out to a close friend that helped me get my life back on track. We were together everyday at the beginning of my sobriety doing “boot camp” style workouts at a local track. He suggested I try CrossFit because of the structure of it. I originally joined CrossFit purely to stay sober, and that was the only reason, but it has become more than that. I could go and get a great workout and feel a “high” after finishing a WOD. That’s when it became my new addiction, an addiction my family didn’t mind me having lol. And it’s been my most consistent thing since I changed my lifestyle. I don’t like to get all sappy but it literally helped save my life.
2. What is your favorite part about CrossFit Firewall?
My favorite part about Firewall is obviously the people. The coaches are spot on, and the members are awesome, except for that kid Purp, he’s a weirdo. This gym is perfect, and the people and coaches only make it better. Also the programming is spot on, I have been a member at other boxes and never felt strong like I do after joining this box. I’ve hit many PR’s with these coaches and there is something to be said about that.
3. How long have you been CrossFitting and why do you keep coming back?
5 years. I keep coming back because I need to. It is a part of my daily routine. I live a pretty vanilla lifestyle lol. Work, CrossFit, AA Meetings, and golf…lots of golf.
4. What would you say to someone who is hesitant about trying CrossFit?
I would say it’s not easy at the beginning but that’s what’s fun about it. It’s you vs. yourself. If you enjoy getting better at something this is a great way to start. Sometimes you got to get uncomfortable to get comfortable.
5. How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?
I joined CrossFit like I said to get my life back on track. And that’s exactly what it has done for me. I’m way more active. A recent doctors appointment made me appreciate everything, I’m down 35+ pounds and all my blood work came back perfect.
6. What’s your favorite class to attend and why?
Any class I can get to. I mostly go to the 9am and the people in that class are great but that’s going to change soon as my schedule will have me back to working day shifts. So hopefully my old 4pm crew welcomes me back with open arms.
7. Have you seen any correlation between the quality of the food you eat and how you feel when working out?
For sure! I sat with Bucky and talked about my eating and learned a lot. Dubin has also given me a ton of help with it, and I feel awesome during the workouts!
8. What part of a kid’s movie left you scarred when you were younger? (Scarred not scared 😉 )
The Goonies. The scene when they are threatening to put Chunks hand in the blender ???
9. Favorite cheat meal?
Pizza and Cool Ranch Doritos
10. What is the most ridiculous fact you know?
That my wife is always right.
