Congrats on earning this month’s honor, Bry!  You have been working your butt off ever since joining, but you have been really kicking it into sixth gear as of late.  Thank you for all the hard work you put in with us and always bringing such a contagious positive attitude to class.  You’re the best!

1. How long have you been at Firewall and how did you hear about us?

I’ve been at Firewall for two years, since October 2017. My neighbors, Tom Gerry and Dana Bureau told me about Firewall and I went to an introductory class with Tom.

2. What were you most hesitant about before deciding to join?

I had never lifted free weights besides the standard bench press before.

3. How has your developed fitness inside the gym effected your life outside the gym?

The fitness developed inside the gym helps my mood and energy outside the gym. I’m a much more
relaxed and confident person because of the workouts.

4. What’s your proudest accomplishment since joining?

This is a difficult one to answer. I remember a lot of small moments like setting a PR in the deadlift at 305, doing my first rope climb, kipping pull-ups, etc. There always seems to be a new, fun challenge and another area to develop in which is my favorite part about CrossFit (see question 6). My other proud moments mostly involve having good one-liners during the workouts.

5. What is your favorite part about Firewall?

I really like the people and atmosphere. The instructors are very supportive and personable and very good at noticing and making corrections to keep everyone growing in their fitness. It’s also a lot of fun – I even miss it on rest days.

6. What is your favorite part about CrossFit?

I really like the variety and the unending challenges and opportunity for growth, whether it’s strength, speed or skill.

7. How long have you been participating in Firewall nutrition program and why do you participate
in it?

I’ve done the Firewall nutrition program for about eight months and will ‘graduate’ in a few weeks. I’ve always been self-conscious about my weight and felt great when I have been able to keep my weight down. I enjoyed losing weight during the paleo challenge in Spring 2018 but gained it all back and then some. I wanted to develop habits where I would not need to calorie count or make changes that I could not continue in the long-term. I’ve also had times where I’ve lost weight during triathlon and marathon training but gained more back after the race was over. I’ve stayed in the program so long to ensure I could keep the weight off after the triathlon earlier this fall.

8. If someone were thinking about inquiring to join Firewall, what would you tell them to take that
leap of faith?

I really like that Firewall adapts the workouts to any skill and strength level and at the same time enables everyone to ‘Rx the stimulus’. Also, the atmosphere is fun, supportive and welcoming.

9. Why do you make health a priority?

I really enjoy the feeling of being able to move around, run, ski, swim, bike, etc. I’d like to be able to enjoy this freedom. Health also makes me a better person mentally for my family and friends.

10. What’s your favorite quote of all time and why?

So many to pick from here. I really like quotes so don’t really have a favorite. One quote I remind myself of is “Be here, now”. Another is a quote from the Buddha, “Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Good advice but sometimes difficult to follow.

11. What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I got to shake President Carter’s hand in college, even though I was standing two rows back in a big crowd. Sometimes it’s good to put yourself out there and hope for the best. He’s a good guy.
